Sally’s design is inspired by memories of family visits to her Grandma’s in Kent. Days spent in the cherry orchards, climbing trees, gathering the sweet ripe fruit, and eating more than made it to the baskets! Then back to Grandma’s, where the aroma of a cooling cake and sounds of fruit bubbling on the stove filled the cottage. Grandma would share the secret ingredient – cherry brandy – and point to the picture on the bottle and state,“it’s Queen Victoria’s favourite!” Always as if it was the first time she’d told us! It always felt very naughty and still takes me back to those happy days. Sally’s artistic practice explores boundaries, in particular distinctions between craft, fine art and gender stereotyping. Her work challenges and subverts activities, traditionally associated with women and domesticity. More recently she has found a love for teaching others many of the skills she has acquired and she runs a wide variety of workshops and community art projects.
